What Does Sea Moss Do For Your Hair?

Sea moss is a type of edible algae or seaweed found in waters along the rocky Atlantic coasts, mainly between North America and Europe.

Low in calories and fat, and packed full of vitamins and minerals, sea moss has become popular in the health and beauty world as it’s a good source of iodine and antioxidants, and also contains protein.

Sea moss offers a myriad of benefits, but one of the most common uses is for hair.

So, what can sea moss do for your hair?

1. Promotes hair health

Sea moss is packed full of antioxidants, so it draws out free radicals and toxins that cause build-up on the scalp and damage to your hair.

Instead, sea moss helps keep your hair in optimal condition and encourages the growth of healthy hair.

2. Helps scalp inflammation

As an antimicrobial, sea moss addresses and prevents the growth of harmful bacteria on the scalp. The build-up of bacteria or microbes can cause scalp irritation and inflammation, which also stunts hair growth.

3. Conditions the hair

Sea moss gel is perfect for conditioning your hair, especially if you have tight curls and coils that are naturally prone to dryness and frizz. Sea moss provides “slip” to the hair, which increases its condition and manageability for softer, healthier hair.

4. Strengthens strands

Sea moss reinforces and strengthens natural hair strands, and the stronger your hair is, the less likely it is to break off during its natural growth cycle. This is great if you’re trying to maintain long, healthy hair.

5. Increases shine

Sea moss gel is great for reviving dull, lackluster hair as it will give your strands a natural, shimmering shine.

6. Improves scalp health

Scalp health is essential if you want to grow long, healthy hair.

Not only is sea moss antimicrobial, anti-oxidant, and antifungal, it will also encourage the production of sebum, which ensures your scalp stays moisturized and dandruff-free.

Can you use sea moss gel in your hair?

Yes - gel is one of the easiest forms to consume or apply sea moss in.

Sea moss gel can be applied directly to your skin and hair and will work as a mask to eliminate unwanted microorganisms and moisturize your skin and hair.

Sea moss is also an effective conditioning agent for your hair and skin.

As well as applying sea moss gel topically, it can be consumed as part of your diet. It’s pretty much flavorless, so it’s ideal for adding to smoothies, soups, and desserts.

You can create sea moss gel from raw sea moss. Simply soak the moss in water for a day, then toss it into a blender until it reaches a gel-like consistency.

Does sea moss make your hair grow?

Sea moss promotes scalp and hair health, two things that are essential to creating the right conditions for hair growth.

However, hair growth is also dependent on the individual, so if your hair grows ½ an inch a month, you can’t expect it to accelerate to 2 inches a month just by adding sea moss to your health and beauty regime.

However, there are certainly several benefits associated with sea moss and these could help promote hair growth.

Sea moss conditions your hair and improves scalp condition. Hair will break less and become stronger, which is key for growing longer hair.

So while sea moss may not be a hair growth miracle, it can certainly give you healthier, stronger hair and will promote hair growth in an indirect way.

As a pre-poo

One common way to apply sea moss to your hair is to apply it before washing.

The sea moss will act as a detangler and will protect hair from the harsh chemicals found in shampoo.

As a deep-conditioner

You can also apply the sea moss after washing your hair.

Use it as a deep conditioner, applying generous amounts to your wet hair and leaving it on for 30-45 minutes to work its magic. Then rinse off and dry and style your hair as usual.
