Can You Take Sea Moss With Blood Pressure Medicine?

Sea moss, also known as Carrageenan is a form of seaweeds that is made from parts of various red algae, and it is used in medicine.

It is often used for bronchitis, tuberculosis and intestinal problems. It is also used in many other things such as a stabilizer in medications, foods, toothpaste and even as an ingredient in weight loss products.

It is safest to use when taken by mouth in food, it is not recommended for those who have a low blood pressure, as it can lower blood pressure even further.

If you have high blood pressure and are on high blood pressure medicine however, taking sea moss with your blood pressure medicine poses the risk of it dropping your blood pressure too low. Therefore, you should avoid taking sea moon (carrageenan) with blood pressure medications such as; captopril, enalapril, valsartan, furosemide, and so on. 

It may be okay with some medications, however, you should always consult your doctor/ health practitioner before you take any sea moss alongside any medication, especially a medication that will affect your blood pressure, as it does have the potential to make your blood pressure too low, even if your blood pressure is very high, and you are already taking medication for this issue. 

Does sea moss interact with medications?

It is possible that sea moss (carrageenan) may affect some medications. Of course, we have already noted how it has the potential to affect blood pressure medications, so if you are taking a blood pressure medicine either for low or high blood pressure you will need to be careful.

If you take medicine for high blood pressure then there is a chance that the addition of sea moss will make your blood pressure drop too low. If you are taking medication for low blood pressure then there is the chance that sea moss may cancel out your medication and your blood pressure will remain low. This is why you should always consult your doctor before you take something such as sea moss, especially if you suffer from blood pressure  issues. 

You should also be cautious of using sea moss (carrageenan) alongside medications that slow down blood clotting (by this we mean anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs). It may interact with these medications moderately and so you should be cautious with this combination. This is because sea moss may slow blood clotting and so taking sea moss alongside medications that also slow clotting may increase the chances of bruise or bleeding.

So you should be cautious of using sea moss alongside medications such as; aspirin, clopidogrel, ibuprofen, naproxen, enoxaparin, as well as others. Always consult your health practitioner before you take sea moss if you take any of these medications. 

Is sea moss a blood thinner?
